Observation

  • Describe the physical setting (e.g., how space is arranged, toys and materials available) for this teacher-directed lesson about phonological awareness. Where is the teacher situated? Where are the children? What does the teacher say and do to give instructions for the activity? How do the children respond? What happens when she introduces the first word and asks the children for the letter sound it begins with? How do the children respond?

Application

  • Which teaching practices does the teacher use? Check the “Know” and “Do” sections for ideas. Are they successful in helping children notice the beginning sounds in words?
  • How does the teacher respond to children whose answers are not correct? How does the teacher respond to children whose answers are correct?

  • What are some other ways teachers can introduce word sounds? How might the teacher build on this lesson?
  • How could phonological awareness be built into routines and transitions such as preparing to go outdoors or washing hands?

Where are they seated in relation to each other? What does the teacher say and do? How does the child respond? How does the teacher offer encouragement?

  • Which teaching practices does the teacher use? Check the “Know” and “Do” sections for ideas. How can you tell if the practices are successful in helping this child recognize and clap out the syllables in words?
  • How does the teacher respond when the child has difficulty with one of her requests? How does the teacher respond when his answers are correct?

  • What are some other ways teachers can introduce syllables? How might the teacher build on this lesson with this child?
  • How could this activity be used for all children in the group (e.g., as part of group time or during routines and transitions)?
