Accessibility for Digital Media

Review guidelines for determining whether digital media developed for the Early Childhood Learning and Knowledge Center (ECLKC) meets Section 508 requirements. Digital media includes animations, webinars, podcasts, audio conferences, and more.

To ensure your digital media meets all standards:

  • Provide synchronized captioning for all videos with audio.
    • Transcribe every spoken work and recognizable sound to the greatest extent possible.
    • Include a transcript for all video and audio presentations.
    • For more information, see Captioning Video and Audio Files.
  • Ensure that all media playback (e.g., start, stop, pause) and videos with closed captions can be turned on and off via keyboard commands.
  • Use actual text rather than images of text.
  • When using "hotspots" or bookmarks in videos, make them available to assistive technologies and keyboard commands by means of tabbing.
    • Include a written description (alt text) for the main graphic and separate alt text for the hotspot.
  • Include a written description, such as alt text or a long description, for all graphics and digital images.
    • Use a long description for images such as charts and graphs to provide a detailed explanation.
    • For more information, see Alt Text.
