Taxonomy fields, a resource tagging system, allows users to explore information collections by applying multiple filters. Each resource is tagged or classified with relevant taxonomy that it shares with similar content.
These are the primary taxonomy fields for HeadStart.gov:
- Topic: a broad category representing the subject of the document
- Tag: more specific than a topic; a tag represents what the document is about
- Age Group (e.g., infants and toddlers, preschoolers)
- Audience (e.g., home visitors, child care health consultants, parents)
- Program Type (e.g., Early Head Start, EHS-Child Care Partnerships)
- Program Option (e.g., center-based, home-based, family child care)
- Series: identifies whether a resource is part of a series (e.g., Healthy Home Visiting)
Submission
For each page, use the Submission Form to select options for taxonomy fields. All taxonomy fields are single option, with the exception of tags, which allows for a maximum of three selections.
If a new tag is required, use the Submission Form to request that it be created. Include a description of 40 to 100 words and, optionally, a feature image of 600 x 400 px. Include a list of existing HeadStart.gov content that should be tagged with it. The form can also be used to update, merge, or delete existing tags. If the submission is exclusively used for taxonomy, select "Taxonomy" as product type.
Additional Guidance
- The description clarifies the scope and content for each tag and should not differ from the common use of the phrase.
- Tags should cover a decent number of resources — not too few and never just one.
- Conversely, tags shouldn’t display too many resources. Tags with more than 30 resources should be split into two or more tags to improve the user experience.
