Selecting Content

Social media messaging is a way to repackage official online content to reach more people and make a bigger impact. While content should be engaging and relevant to our audiences’ interests, it must also reflect the accuracy and credibility of our online communications and the Office of Head Start (OHS) as a whole. Everything posted to OHS social media channels must align with the objectives and support the mission of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Administration for Children and Families (ACF), OHS. Visit Digital.gov for more information on federal requirements for social media

All official uses of social media must be approved by ACF/OHS in consultation with HHS New Media and the appropriate government communications office. The decision to use a social media tool must be based on a strategic marketing plan. It also must address the commitment of resources needed to manage and maintain public engagement. All social media must be posted to ACF/OHS-sanctioned accounts; no third-party platforms may be used.

In most cases, links posted on Head Start social media accounts must go to an official government website (.gov address). Post content to the ECLKC or the ACF/OHS website prior to sharing on Facebook or X. Information from other .gov sites can also be shared when it is relevant to the mission of OHS.

Occasionally, we may link to an unofficial website such as a webinar service or a news item that directly references OHS and its work. These instances will be approved by OHS on a case-by-case basis. Links to these resources also must appear on the ECLKC.

Selected content should be evidence-based and apolitical. Unless clearly noted, content should reflect the position of OHS, not one individual.

A note on controversial topics: We have a responsibility to share serious and sometimes controversial content when it relates to the mission of the Head Start program. However, we will never intentionally post controversial subject matter to increase page views or provoke engagement.
